Whole-istic Hygiene

The key to successful dieting is to make a commitment to stop dieting. A recent panel of weight loss experts from the National Institutes of Health Nutrition Coordinating Committee stated that none of the conventional approaches to losing weight is effective. They went on to say that two thirds of all weight loss is regained within one year of program completion, and that only 3% of those who take weight off keep it off for at least 5 years. This “yo-yo” pattern of dieting is ultimately as harmful to the body as being overweight, and far worse for the mind as it actualizes and empowers failure. The truth is hygiene begins where dieting ends.

Hygiene is defined as the promotion, and preservation of health and prevention of disease. Dieting is an impulsive, temporary quick fix. It is merely another in a life long line of desperate acts. Ultimately it is a sustaining excuse for us not to have to get down to the truth about who we really are, what we really suffer from and what we really need to do about it. Hygiene implies “whole-ism.” It reminds us that we are profoundly sensitive, complex beings who require great care in body, mind and spirit. There will never be a way to satisfy the true needs of any human being by simply waving the dieting wand. True committed care giving for body, mind and spirit is the only way to promote and preserve health and prevent disease. Where there is true committed care giving there need be no dieting. Such care giving begins and ends within the core of each of us.

True hygiene begins in the spirit with a commitment to giving to our precious selves. Not unlike feeding a brand new beautiful baby we must make a nurturing emotional connection to the sacred self we were given. We must forget our past and where we came from. We must forget the lies that have convinced us of our self-contempt. Our commitment must be unconditional. It must be to our “authentic self,” to “now,” and it must be “forever.” When we fall we must think only of getting up. When weak we must think only of how long we’ve already waited. Life is far too precious to be superficial even for a minute. We all require a feeding far beyond the world’s ability to satisfy. Our endless hunger may only be vanquished by a commitment to nurture our lives at our own hand, fully in body, mind and spirit.
